But what kind of lunatic would just pay random strangers to walk? The app and registration are both free, so what’s in it for the developers? Well, they make some of their money from ad revenues since you can earn a few extra points each day by watching an advertisement or two. Additionally, most of the lower-cost rewards you can buy with sweatcoins are only discounts or trial memberships, so the app is effectively marketing for those companies.

Swagbucks

Swagbucks has a business model that’s duplicated quite a lot and began with websites before transitioning to mobile platforms. Like with Sweatcoin, this app rewards you for doing stuff you would be doing anyway. For example, it pays you to use Swagbucks Search as your default search engine instead of Google. It uses Yahoo search results, so you’ll still find what you’re looking for in the end, but you’ll earn more than a useful website for doing so. What Swagbucks is best known for is paying people to complete surveys. While not exactly an everyday task, it requires little to no thought or effort. You can also get paid to watch adverts, shop online and play simple games – all good ways to fill a bit of empty time, if you happen to have some to spare.

MobileXpression

Similar to Swagbucks, MobileXpression pays you for providing customer data that companies can use to plan more effective marketing and more popular products. However, this one is even more passive and doesn’t even demand your spare time of you. Once you’ve installed the app, it simply monitors your mobile data usage. It works entirely in the background and won’t slow down your device’s performance. As is inevitably the case, the easiest solutions are rarely the most rewarding. MobileXpression only pays its users in Amazon gift cards at a rate of $5 for a week’s worth of data, though you do get the chance of winning up to $100,000 in the occasional lotteries they run. Additionally, they limit the number of monthly users, so you won’t be able to earn a consistent or sizeable income.

Acorns

There are quite a few apps that work by linking your debit or credit cards through a third party in order to provide some kind of financial advantage. They work in slightly different ways, from monitoring your payments to check for ways you could be cutting costs to giving you cash back for spending through the app. Acorns is one of the more creative (and, judging from over half a million reviews on the App Store, very popular) approaches. Whenever you buy something with a linked account, the cost is rounded up to the nearest dollar. In most cases, that’ll be nothing more than a few cents – sums that you’ll hardly notice but, as anyone who has ever had a penny jar will tell you, sums that add up over time. Acorns takes your spare change and puts it into a separate account – a digital penny jar – that it uses for investments. You don’t actually get anything from those investments. In fact, Acorns really is just a digital penny jar, working on the basis that the spare change will accumulate over time and create a nice little back-up fund for emergencies or special treats. However, their “Found Money” service is a way of making some passive income since it gives you cash back on purchases made through your Acorns-linked account. It should be noted that Acorns isn’t a free service as it costs $1 per month for accounts containing less than $5,000.

Depending on the app, the registration process might be as simple as putting in an email address or as complex as linking it to a bank account. In all cases, everything is done to make the process as simple as possible.

Things to Consider before using Passive Income Apps

There’s really no downside to making passive income through apps, except for the fact that you’re highly unlikely to make much. Additionally, whatever you do get paid will often be in the form of points, vouchers, and discounts you can only use for certain products or as cash back from purchases rather than direct income.

Installing these apps may result in you needing to sit through more adverts than you would ordinarily like to or use your spare time doing something rather inane and trivial. However, it’s better than twiddling your thumbs for free.
